1. Ramblings

I’m quite surprised or better: disappointed. Though I got several new subscriptions in the past two weeks (as usually), none of them came from the contest in this newsletter.

This could have several reasons:

- You don’t like my newsletter (I hope not!).
- You didn’t come around to recommending it (I would understand that).
- The signup form didn’t work (I tested it again).
- The prize was not attractive enough (what would you like to have?).

OK, I decided to give it another try. Please recommend my newsletter to a few of your friends that could enjoy it as well.
By doing so, you will enter the subscriber contest. The reader who sends me the most new subscribers will win “The Negative Calorie Ebook” worth almost 20 USD.
The rules are easy:
- you must be a subscriber before this issue is published (this is easy, otherwise you wouldn’t get the issue, except someone forwards it to you)
- your friend must use the special subscription form at http://www.keywordfocusedcontentpages.com/contest.html to subscribe and enter your email address as referrer (that way I can track the subscriptions to you)

- your friend has to confirm her subscription

And then “The WINNER is….”
No tricks, no drawing, no luck involved: simply the person who sends me the most new subscribers will win. And off course, I publish the winner in my next newsletter. (including your Homepage URL if you wish to).
Good Luck and start recommending your friends!!

2. A Better Approach to Low Carb Dieting
By Dr. John Walker, M.D.
Gastroenterologist & Scientific Advisory Board Member

I am proud to introduce to you an exciting new low carb diet program that offers significant benefits over the currently available plans. The Walker Diet is based on years of personal experience, research and a desire to improve on what already exists. You may be curious as to how this all evolved.

As I have outlined the diet in great detail, I am not going to spell out the specifics here. You can read about the program (free of charge -- no book to buy!) on www.vitacost.com/products/walkerdiet.

Here, I discuss the principles and practices behind a low carb diet, and take you through each of the 3 phases: Rapid Reduction, Continuing Reduction, and Maintenance. You can refer to each of these phases as it suits your needs. Healthier diet, easier plan, better products.

As I have noted in the articles referenced above, Dr. Atkins was the pioneer of low carb diets. However, he simply allowed too much saturated fat to be truly healthy.

One of the bedrock principles of the Walker Diet is an emphasis on lowering the saturated fat content, and replacing it with good quality fat. One can achieve these results by eating certain foods and using well-designed supplements.

That is why I developed the Walker Diet shakes. Walker Diet shakes are lower in fat than the other popular brands. Whereas most shakes have 9 to 10 grams of fat per serving, our shakes contain only 6 grams. That is 30 to 40% less fat. And of course, it is predominantly polyunsaturated fat, which is better for you than saturated fat. Plus, with 5 delicious flavors, you can avoid the boredom of eating eggs every morning.

In addition to lower fat content, Walker Diet shakes are high in excellent sources of fiber, including oats, carrots and soy fiber. And even though you won't be eating much fruit on the Rapid Reduction phase, drinking just 2 shakes per day will provide you with 46% of your daily fiber needs. Combine this with some low carb vegetables, and you will meet your daily fiber requirement.

The Walker Diet shakes are also a great source of daily nutrition. Do you know that if you drank just two shakes per day (using them to replace breakfast and lunch, for example), that you would get at least 100% of the FDA requirement of 15 important vitamins and minerals? Plus, these two daily shakes would provide you with more than 50 % of 5 additional vitamins and minerals. This includes an incredible 800 mg of calcium per day. Talk about getting what's good for you!

Calcium is an essential part of health. It is important for healthy bones, maintaining proper blood pressure, helping to decrease your risk of colon cancer, and even helping you to lose weight. That's right, getting extra calcium can help you lose weight!

This has been well documented in a review article published in the January 2003 issue of the Journal of Nutrition, by Dorothy Teegarden. In this review, Teegarden discusses many of the articles that have investigated the relationship between calcium intake and weight reduction. She concludes that "the current and rapidly growing body of evidence is substantial and supports the relationship of dietary calcium intake to reductions in weight and body fat mass." So clearly, the Walker Diet is giving you the optimal weapons to fight fat.

Only the finest ingredients.

Not only do the shakes and bars, which are available in three delicious flavors -- cookies & cream, chocolate peanut butter and creamy cinnamon bun -- contain important vitamins and minerals, but we use the best forms of these nutrients to maximize their benefits.

For example, instead of using a cheap brand of vitamin C, we use Ester-C, a form that is non-acidic, retained longer and absorbed better. We also use the best chelated forms of zinc, selenium and chromium that are currently produced. Yes, they cost more, but they are the RIGHT forms of the nutrients that you need, based on the scientific literature available at this time. And our commitment to quality demands that we use only the best.

Many low carb products use hydrolyzed collagen for part of their protein content. Yes, they have a lot of protein, but this form is very poor quality and not well assimilated in the human body. In fact, based on biochemistry text books, this protein has zero value and excess amounts of this protein are toxic to the body and form ammonia. Hydrolyzed collagen is made from the remains of dead animal carcasses after the marketable parts are removed.

Read your labels! Our use of the superior forms of protein, such as whey and soy in our shakes and bars, provide superior nutritional products with heath benefits. In fact, the FDA allows the claim that soy reduces the risk of heart disease because of the overwhelming evidence supporting this statement.

When I talk about good fat, I have to mention olive oil. This staple of Mediterranean diets has tremendous health benefits, functioning as an antioxidant, and helping with cholesterol management. We didn't just slap a label on a cheap brand. We found organic, extra-virgin olive oil. It has a smooth, mellow flavor, and is fantastic when mixed with some red wine vinegar, a dash of salt and some pepper, culminating in a perfect low carb salad dressing.

It doesn't mean anything if it doesn't taste good.

All of our products have undergone double-blind taste testing to make sure that they are far superior to the other brands. I'm sure you will be pleased with the delicious flavors and textures that we have come up with. These products had to pass an additional rigorous test: me! Having sampled a variety of products on the market for the last several years, I believe that I have an excellent basis for comparison.

And, I would characterize myself as somewhat particular when it comes to taste -- I'm not going to settle for "okay." It has to be excellent, and better than what's already available. I am confident that you will agree with me on this count.

One great example is our potato substitute, called Quick Potatoes. Some of the low carb potato mixes on the market would be better served for use as wall spackle or tile glue. Ours have a great consistency, just like whipped potatoes, and come in 3 delicious flavors. Once you get on the Continuing Reduction and Maintenance phases of the diet, you can enjoy these with your dinner.

Best quality, good tasting…and a great value!

Finally, we wanted to make sure that these products are a good value. You can see quite easily that by comparing products at Vitacost.com, Walker Diet products are less expensive, in general. For example, while other popular 11-serving containers of shake mix sell for nearly $14, ours are only $12. That's about 14% less, which adds up after a while. And if you think being on a diet will be more expensive, think about this: If you have a shake for breakfast and lunch, a piece of cheese for your morning snack, and a Walker Diet bar for your afternoon snack, you will be spending about $5 on your whole day's supply of food, other than dinner. Try doing that in a fast food place. Plus, you will be getting all of the good, quality nutrition that we discussed above.

Completely compatible with Atkins and South Beach Diets.

If you are already on the Atkins or South Beach diets, the Walker Diet products are a perfect fit for you. All Walker Diet products are completely compatible with both low carb diet plans. Walker Diet products give you some variety, better taste and better value than Atkins, and extend the spectrum of allowable foods for the South Beach Diet.

One last thing - the Walker Diet products are healthy for everyone, even children, the elderly and people at their ideal weights who want to eat healthy and have great energy.

I would encourage you to give the Walker Diet a try. Our current array of products is a good start, and we will be introducing more great tasting products in the future. If you are just beginning, use the Rapid Reduction phase to get yourself started in achieving your weight reduction goals. If you have been following a low carb diet, but are stuck on a plateau, give the Continuing Reduction phase a try. And if you are happy with your current weight, but realize that the amount of carbs that you are eating is unhealthy, or if you have already been through the first two phases, go ahead and begin with the Maintenance phase. This offers the most variety.

I wish you good health and enjoyment in life.

4. Tax Deduction for prescribed weight loss treatments

Maybe you have heard that the IRS changed their tax rules and now allows deducting expenses incurred for weight loss.

But not all expenses for weight loss are deductible. You must first have a doctor diagnose a disease that will benefit from weight loss such as obesity, heart disease, hypertension and high cholesterol.

Then the deductible expenses for weight loss treatment include surgery, weight-loss drugs (FDA approved), physician and hospital-based programs, behavioral counseling, dietitians and nutritionists.

Non-deductible expenses are health club dues, nutritional supplements, over-the-counter products, diet foods and exercise equipment.

So if you are planning on spending a major amount on some weight loss treatments, such as surgery or prescription drugs, go to your doctor first and have yourself diagnosed a disease that will benefit from weight loss.
